We are Just Passing Through

“We are all visitors to this time, this place. We are just passing through. Our purpose here is to observe, to learn, to grow, to love… and then we return home.”

Australian Aboriginal proverb

Simply put. With only thirty-one words, the longest having a mere eight letters, this proverb clearly speaks the truth for an ancient world and for the billions who have ever inhabited the planet. It is a sentiment that we may all value its worth.

Our Essence Articulated so Beautifully

My way of expressing myself is through writing. Everything I write reflects my truth, my guiding light, and my perspective on life. When I first read this proverb, I saw more than just words. I saw the essence of our lives articulated so beautifully. To my mind, this proverb is undeniable, it is radiant, enlightening, and truly magnificent.

You May Ask Why

With odds stacked against us, we enter this world as an empty vessel. Our life is limited, with a beginning, an end, and everything between these points filling us and shaping who we are.

We absorb the workd around us and we learn. When we learn we grow. When we grow, we see life in new ways. We become different than before and hopefully more open to what the world offers. We advnace as do those around us.

We really aren’t very special. We are more alike than what you may think.–all of us. It is in our actions, both good and bad, that make us who we are. Our actions make us and our life one of a kind. We make the decision of “what kind” of person we will grow into.

Our actions separate us. When we are open to all others, we learn, we grow and our kindness and compassion leads to empathy. Love is probably the most powerful emotion the most powerful force we have. It’s a shame not to use this power. As temporary our life is, it seems to me we would strive to love as our love lasts. This is the road we should aspire to follow.

Our Impermanence

No question about it, we are just passing through. Since life and all that it encompasses are impermanent, we have a finite time on this planet to get it “right”. Because of this, it makes sense to treat our journey as sacred, to appreciate all we encounter, and to strive for harmony with all living beings.

Our purpose isn’t, I don’t think, to make make stuff, sell stuff, do what we please and live in our bubble–individually or as a community.

Our Purpose is More Than What We Think

Recognizing that we are only passing through, I believe we should embrace gratitude as we learn from our experiences. Love, a universally desired state of being, can only develop when we accept the impermanence of our journey and find ways to appreciate, accept, and celebrate all living creatures.

When the Times Comes

Since our lives are just a tiny blip in the vast flow of time, it is through our actions—big or small—that we create a full life, or don’t.

When the time comes for me to go home, I will be ready.
